I have not seen a clear cut explanation on how to install NPCS and TkFE and it work for everyone the first time.  Here it is...

If you have installed any version of Samsung PC Studio other than New PC Studio 1.21 IH1, and/or any Samsung USB drivers other than those provided in New PC Studio 1.21 IH1 and your computer does not recognize your phone immediately when you plug it in,  you need to CLEAN  IT UP as outlined here.  Otherwise skip to CEAN INSTALL

CLEAN  IT UP
You must uninstall PC Studio first.  Do not use Add Remove Programs or Programs and Features in the control panel to do this as it may not remove all the drivers.  Use the Uninstall utility next to the Samsung New PC Studio or Samsung PC Studio 3 links under Start> Programs.  Reboot and then go to Add Remove Programs (XP) or Programs and Features (Vista and Win 7) in Control Panel and uninstall anything that says Samsung.  Reboot one more time after everything Samsung is gone.

CLEAN INSTALL
Prepare your phone first.
Navigate to Menu> Settings> Connectivity> Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is OFF.
Back out once and go to Select USB Mode and choose Samsung PC Studio. Click Save and return to the idle screen.  With this method DO NOT go into the Admin menu and change from Samsung USB Mode.
Make sure the phone is on and at the idle screen (wallpaper) and all apps are closed.  Hit the red call end button to be sure. DO NOT connect the USB data cable yet.
Make sure you have your sim card installed.

Prepare your computer.
Download New PC Studio 1.21 IH1.exe from the Samsung.com.  Install using the default settings.  In Windows 7 you will get a notice that the drivers are not signed. Click install anyway.  You may see this 6 to 7 times.
Install TkFileExplorer

Reboot your computer one more time and then connect your phone to the data cable.
You should see a bubble come up telling you new hardware is found and it should load the drivers for your phone.  It should tell you the drivers were installed successfully.
NPCS should open automatically and identify your phone.  Now close NPCS.
Now open TkFileExplorer.
Click the icon at the top with the gear and a box will pop up for you to select the com port.
Verify there is a com port in the box and click ok.
On the Mythic the drop down list will be empty as TkFileExplorer 2.2 does not know how to communicate with the new Samsung Mobile Modem V2.  Go to Device Manager, click the arrow or plus to expand Modems and open the properties on Samsung Mobile Modem V2.  Click the Modem tab and note the com port number.  Close all and enter the com port number into the port box in TkFE just as it appeared.  COM#
Click ok and click the connect icon at the top of TkFE.  The one with the Computer and phone.
You should see a list of folders appear n the bottom right pane of TkFE.  If so, you are done.

Tips:
Always make sure New PC Studio is closed before opening TkFileExplorer.
The Device connection monitor for NPCS in the task bar has no effect on TkFE so don't worry about it.

If you don't want NPCS opening every time you plug in your phone, then in NPCS go to settings and on the Option tab deselect the option Automatically start Device connection monitoring when Windows starts.

Download and unzip TkFileExplorer anywhere you want and put a shortcut on the desktop.

The quickest way to the Device Manager is left click Start, right click Computer or My Computer,  left click properties, (in XP left click hardware), then left click Device Manager.

Use a quality data cable.  This test was done with genuine Samsung cables.

Notes:
This process was verified on the following systems.
These systems had to be cleaned up
Abit ic7 w/Windows 7 RC x86
PNY GeForce 7100 w/XP Home
HP  d530 w/XP Pro

These were a clean install
Dell GS60 w/XP home
Dell Inspiron i1505 w/Vista basic
Dell T650r w/W2K

The following Samsung phones were able to connect to TkFE successfully
A727, A737, A767 Propel, A867 Eternity,and A887 Mythic.

Thanks for your very thorough and clear instructions.  Unfortunately, after I did all that exactly as written, I got the message:  "ERROR: The Communication Link is Lost."

I had determined the correct Com# (Com8) using device manager, so I am lost as to what to do next..  This did work right at one time several weeks agobut I can't get it to work again.

Any help is appreciated.

At this point the only thing you can do is reboot phone and try again. Als try rebooting computer. Try starting TKFE first then plugging phone in or plug phone in first then start TKFE. First time can be a pain.

I also got the "ERROR: The Communication Link is Lost." message repeatedly.  The solution for me was to turn my phone off and try to connect.

Thanks!  This worked!!!  My wife has an Impression... Can I just plug hers in to my laptop and load the same software (Google Maps and Opera) that I loaded on my Mythic?  Thanks Goat Tamer for all your work and patience!

Yes they will work on the impression too. Stop on over at the impression forum. http://www.samsung-impression.org/  and browse around. Phones are basically compatible with each others software.

Tried the above clean-up three times with no success on:

Xp Pro
Mythic SGH-A897
Studio 1.3.0  112-7

error - Warning: Unable to open specified port.

Modem properties shows COM 4 and Query Modem in manage is Success
Studio works fine

Tried all combinations of on/off.  Same error.
Also no success with this new phone model and Studio on Windows 7.

Any suggestions?HuhHuhHuh??

For windows 7,  try installing with vista compatibility by right clicking om file or .exe

Also use this version of pc studio :

http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=US&CttFileID=2382754&CDCttType=SW&ModelType=N&ModelName=SGH-A887&VPath=SW/200908/20090811225139656/Samsung_NPS_1.2.1.IH1.exe

If you need usb drivers download attachment.

What is the software version of the phones this is working on?

My phone is A 897UCIIA.

The drivers are working because I can run the diagnostics on the modem (Mythic) and it is successful.  PC Studio (both versions) run fine.  I have tried to get the above phone to be recognized with installs on 4 different computers (operating systems), trying all variations of on/off etc.  I enter the correct com port as identified and tested using diagnostics.  No luck.  TKF can't open the port.  Could they have changed the phone's software?  This is a brand new Mythic.

Here is what I do:
Download version PC Studio from above.  Phone set to PC Studio.
Install on fresh laptop, XP Pro, never had phone plugged in or any Samsung software.
Install runs fine.  Re-boot.  Plug in phone and drivers install.  Un-plug phone.  Re-boot.  Plug in phone and check com port in control panel/modems.  Run PC Studio.  Works fine.  Close all PC Studio.  Run TKF.  Enter com port.  Not open port error.  Close TKF.  Delete TKF configuration file.  Run TKF.  Enter com port. Same error. Try phone off/phone on.  Same error.

Tried other downloads of TKF, other fresh computers.  All the same results.

Same software version, it works.

Does pc studio connect and work ?

1. are you selecting pc studio on phone when connecting via usb and not mass storage or media player

2. pc studio is definitely closed before using TKFE

Does pc studio connect and work ?  Yes, both versions.  I then remove all programs and drivers and run a reg cleaner prior to trying install again.

1. are you selecting pc studio on phone when connecting via usb and not mass storage or media playerYes and I am using the usb cable that comes with the phone and have tried multiple ports.

2. pc studio is definitely closed before using TKFE  Yes and removed from system tray.  Also tried stopping PC Studio auto load and re-booting.

read this it might help :Read this before posting here.

Still not working with this phone after multiple tries on multiple computers.  Just loading the drivers I can't get the drivers to install when phone is recognised.

The PC Studio link above loads all kinds of phone drivers and software.  Even Nokia drivers and software.  Only one of the loaded programs, Samsung Mobile USB Modem Software, needs to be present for PC Studio to recognise the phone and work.  Remove it and it does not work.  Remove all but it and it works fine. Device manager/modems/diagnostics communicates with the phone successfully.  Install correct COM port in TKFE but it errors can't access port.

Where did TKFE come from originally?

It would seem that if the phone is successfully accessed by the diagnostic program than possibly the driver or phone software is written to interfere with TKFE specifically.

Did your mythic come with a disc ?
You could try installing  just  USB drivers no PC studio.
Then TKFE.

Tried to install just the drivers and they would not load.  Installed Studio and copied drivers folder.  Removed Studio and re-booted.  Installed drivers from the copied folder ok.  TkFE would not work and manager diagnosis would not recognise phone.

There is nothing on the disk except a program that takes you to the net to download the programs etc.
